County awards $150,000 hydrogeologic contract for Alexander Drive garage wells

The St. Joseph County Board of Commissioners voted to award a $150,000 contract to Peerless Midwest for hydrogeologic services and well development at the Alexander Drive Highway Garage project.
Skye Meaders, of the Department of Infrastructure Planning and Growth, told commissioners the work covers test drilling for a domestic water well and a fire-suppression well and is being procured separately from the broader construction project for timing and cost efficiencies. Meaders said the contractor would perform a test well and, if results allow, move immediately to drill the second (fire-service) well.
Meaders said the contract amount is a lump sum of $150,000 and will be funded from the county’s bond fund. A commissioner noted the county’s long-standing practice of requiring wells in significant areas and raised that there have been unrelated contamination issues nearby involving above-ground tanks; Meaders confirmed the department’s review.
Commissioners moved and seconded the award; recorded votes show Commissioners Morton and Hazen voting aye and the motion carried.
The contract was presented as necessary to move the garage project forward by securing on-site water sources for domestic use and fire protection. No schedule for drilling or completion milestones was provided in the meeting record.
