St. Joseph County OKs two temporary leases for leaf collection sites

The St. Joseph County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday approved two month-to-month lease agreements to provide temporary leaf deposit sites during the county’s fall collection program.
County officials said the sites will serve as transfer points where collected leaves are stored temporarily until they are moved to the county’s composting area. One lease is with First Source Bank for a paved area near the former Bovex Golf Course on Cleveland Road; the other is for the remaining half of the property adjacent to the Alexander Road Highway Garage from Alexander Warehouse LLC.
The First Source Bank lease runs month to month at $22.50 per month beginning the first day of the month and continuing monthly until the leaves are removed. County staff said the Alexander Warehouse agreement is on substantially the same terms. Both sites were presented as alternatives after the old Granger Highway Garage site was decommissioned.
Commissioners moved and seconded approval of each lease. For the First Source Bank lease the record shows Commissioners Morton, Hazen and Maxeyer voting aye. For the Alexander Warehouse lease the record shows Commissioners Morton, Hazen and Backliner voting aye; both motions carried.
The leases are temporary storage arrangements only; county staff said leaves will be removed and taken to the county composting area during and after the collection period.
No additional fiscal detail or long-term commitments were discussed during the motions.
