The St. Joseph County Council committee voted to forward reimbursements for police overtime to the full council with a favorable recommendation.
St. Joseph County Police Executive Officer Steve Newman told the committee the department received $102,560 from an "Amazon Community Enhancement Fund" used for patrols along State Road 2 and nearby corridor enforcement, and additional revenue from federal reimbursements tied to U.S. Marshals, DEA and FBI task force activity. "The first amount, 102,560, is from the Amazon Community Enhancement Fund," Newman said. "The second amount is revenue received from the federal government reimbursing overtime for our officers in the US Marshals, DEA, and FBI task force."
Committee members asked about remaining balances and duration of the Amazon-funded patrols. Newman said about $16,000 remained from the original grant and that an additional roughly $80,000 had been allocated at a prior meeting. He estimated the Amazon-funded patrols began in March and would be expended after "a little over 8 months." A committee member asked, "So that lasted that, money from Amazon lasted you how long? About a year?" Newman responded, "A little less than a year. I think we began it in March. So, approximately 8 months or it'll it'll be a little over 8 months by the time it's expended."
A motion to send the reimbursement item forward was made and seconded; the committee registered the favorable recommendation and moved the item to the full council for final approval.
The committee did not provide additional written conditions or a precise expenditure schedule during the discussion; details on exact remaining balances and the timing of any further allocations were not specified in the meeting record.
