County health department renews clinical training agreement with Saint Mary's College

The St. Joseph County Health Department and Saint Mary's College will continue a longstanding clinical training relationship after county commissioners approved a revised memorandum of understanding on Sept. 23.
"This is actually just replacing a very long standing agreement that we've had with Saint Mary's," said Mike Ruble, Department of Health, noting the agreement is roughly 10 years old and the update focuses on liability requirements and prerequisites for students before clinical placement. Ruble said the department wants assurance that students have completed basic training such as universal precautions and basic needle-handling so clinical time can focus on immunizations and the public-health work they will perform in county clinics.
Ruble told commissioners there is no cost to the county for the agreement. Commissioners asked about how the collaboration began; Ruble said the arrangement predates his tenure and that county public-health settings provide clinical experience not always available in hospital placements.
The commissioners moved, seconded and approved the memorandum of understanding by voice vote. Commissioners voting in favor were Mister Morton, Mister Hayden and Mister Maxwell.
