Board approves one-year calendar amendment to host regional teachers institute at GHS

The Galesburg CUSD 205 Board of Education voted to amend the 2026-27 school calendar to permit the Regional Office of Education to hold a region-wide teachers institute at Galesburg Junior-Senior High School.
The motion to make Lou Anne Statham the delegate and Jamie the alternate for the joint annual conference preceded calendar discussion; when the calendar item was introduced, Jake moved and Lou Anne seconded the motion to amend the 2026-27 calendar. The amendment moves the district's April teachers-institute day to the last Friday before fall break (an October date cited during discussion), leaving the overall start and end dates of the school year unchanged.
A district staff member explained the change: "The only facility in the entire region that's big enough to hold everybody is our junior senior high school," and said the district intends to use the day to showcase improvements and to allow regional colleagues to present and learn across districts. Board members asked whether moving the institute displaced local teacher training; the staff member said the district has a seat on the planning committee and that the change would last only one year if it proved unworkable.
The board approved the calendar amendment by voice vote; several board members recorded "Aye." The amendment will make the fall break one day longer in practice because the institute day will precede the break, and the April institute day will be restored in future calendars unless the board or planning committee decides otherwise.
