Board members said the plan balances student instructional time with the logistical needs of packing and moving classrooms. The board motion to adopt “Option 2” was made by Allison Lisonbee and seconded by Darcy; the vote was unanimous.
Under the plan described at the meeting, Mountain Valley Middle School would have the week of Dec. 15–19 off for moving, Regional Elementary School (RES) would have the week of Jan. 5–9 off, and Merobe Elementary School (MES) would have the week of Jan. 12–16 off. The board discussed a single short move week in December for Mountain Valley and two weeks in January for RES and MES; the early-release Fridays are intended to give teachers regular time before those move weeks to pack and prepare.
Superintendent (name not specified) told the board the district had considered an alternative — five remote instruction days followed by five no-school move days — but that remote-meal reimbursement rules would have cost the district roughly $16,000–$20,000 because the federal/state remote meal reimbursement would not apply to planned remote days. The board discussed teacher workload and parent childcare concerns and concluded early-release Fridays would be less disruptive than a full remote week.
Board members and administrators emphasized the move schedule is contingent on final mover bids and logistics. The superintendent said mover bids will open Sept. 30 and that the district expected to learn more about exact move dates after that procurement; she said she expected to have a firm update on Wednesday following the meeting.
Board members also discussed practical issues the move raises: packing deadlines, what furniture and materials teachers must take, and how to schedule professional development to avoid pulling teachers out of classes. The board encouraged principals and the bargaining unit to coordinate schedules so that Friday early releases could be used for meetings or packing time where possible.
The board adopted the calendar motion and will publish the adjusted calendar and move-week details to families once mover availability and final logistics are confirmed.
The board did not approve any additional funding as part of this motion; questions about costs tied to moving vendors, potential childcare supports, or overtime were deferred to staff for follow up.
