The Portland Public Schools policy committee approved a calendar for the 2025-26 year and identified near-term priorities including legally required updates, policies not reviewed in five years, and assessments of potential financial implications.
Board member Lena, speaking for the policy committee, said the committee will review policies to align student device use with a new cell phone rule: "We have to update [IJNDB] in order for it to align with the new cell phone policy, which is JFCK." The committee listed IJNDB (student use of school-issued computers, devices, and the Internet), JFCK (cell phone policy), JICIA (weapons, violence and school safety), ACAA and ACAB (harassment and sexual harassment for students and school employees) and GBEBB (staff conduct with students) as among the next policies under review.
Lena said the committee had asked staff to include possible financial implications when presenting policy changes. The committee intends to hold two discussion meetings before voting: initial review and a later vote on revisions when appropriate.
Separately, the Finance, Personnel and Operations committee reported priorities including maintaining strong financial controls, personnel systems, progress on a facilities master plan, establishing an equitable funding formula, and developing transportation policies and routes. That committee said it will meet twice a month and receive monthly financial and personnel reports covering hires, resignations, vacancies, background checks and credentialing.
