The Charleston City Council on July 21 approved a bill creating a one-way street on the access road between Lovell Drive and Canal Boulevard West to address resident complaints about speeding.
Councilwoman Hoover, who introduced the measure, said the change is intended to slow drivers: "This will hopefully curtail that because we are gonna make it a 1 way street, so they will have to come up and actually turn into that area. So hopefully, that will slow some cars down." The measure passed after a roll call vote and was declared adopted.
The planning streets and traffic committee had recommended passage. Council members did not record objections during discussion, and the clerk completed a roll call as the bill moved to adoption. The ordinance directs staff to modify traffic control devices and update the city's traffic control map and traffic control file.
The council did not attach a timetable for sign installation in the meeting record. Residents with further concerns were told to contact city staff for follow-up.
