Organizers of the Chester Block Captain Program told the City Council Wednesday that more than 200 volunteers spread across 12 locations took part in a recent citywide cleanup.
Hailey Jurena, a member of the Block Captain Program committee, told council the volunteer turnout produced visible improvements in the neighborhoods and that approximately 100 additional people attended a celebration where awards were handed out. Jurena thanked the council and named sponsors and participating partners, including Widener University, which she said staffed sites at First and Edgemont Avenue and the park.
Jurena said the program will move meetings online for the colder months and will publish meeting links on the Block Captain Facebook page; she said an email list will also be used to share events. Council members thanked the volunteers and urged residents to support block captains when they see them working in neighborhoods.
Council invited residents interested in joining to apply through the program’s Facebook page, which Jurena gave as “Chester City Block Captains.” The council did not adopt an item tied to the presentation; the block captain presentation was informational.
