Council approves planned rehabilitation of five Courtney Bend water wells as part of preventive maintenance program

The City Council on Monday approved a consent-agenda item to rehabilitate five wells at the Courtney Bend Water Plant as part of the utility’s preventive maintenance program.
Deputy Director of Municipal Services Matt McLaughlin told the council the project covers rehabilitation of five of the city’s 44 wells — work that includes pulling the pumping units, overhauling pumps and rehabilitating the wells so they continue to operate efficiently and reliably. “These wells have a life of typically around 50 years. But every 8 to 10 years, they require some preventative maintenance to keep them...operating efficiently,” McLaughlin said.
Why it matters
Staff emphasized that the program reduces the risk of catastrophic failure and is planned within the city’s capital improvement program and budget. McLaughlin said the work had been reviewed by the Public Utility Advisory Board and budgeted across multiple fiscal years so the city avoids higher emergency repair costs.
