Public commenters raise employee concerns and ask board to explore military opportunities for students

During the audience of citizens at Tuesday’s Boone County Board of Education meeting, two speakers raised substantive issues for the board’s attention: concerns about staff communication and a request to explore military career opportunities for students.
Charlie Bufano, president of the Boone County Classified Employees Association, told the board that he had previously raised concerns and felt no one had reached out to discuss them. "Nobody reached out to me to discuss what I had said and it's actually not getting any better," Bufano said.
Separately, Nathan Taylor, who identified himself as a veteran, said he discovered the district did not currently offer certain military career opportunities and told the board he has contacts and paperwork he can provide to create options for students. Taylor said he has spoken with members of the community, staff, Boone County personnel and military recruiters and offered to meet with district leaders to present his materials. Dr. Detweiler and other administrators indicated they were willing to meet with Taylor and receive his information.
Neither public comment item resulted in immediate board action; Dr. Detweiler and other staff offered to follow up with both speakers after the meeting.
What’s next: Administrators offered to meet with Taylor to review his materials and said they would follow up with Bufano regarding his concerns.
