City to spend up to $120,000 on rapid-flashing beacon for West Mason crosswalk

Lillian, the presenting staff member, said pedestrian safety and traffic-calming were priorities identified through public input for the consolidated plan and that the West Mason location serves a residential area where Quick Trip will introduce new pedestrian traffic. "Initial estimates that we received from DPW is around $95,000," Lillian said, adding that the $120,000 authorization allows contingency for higher bids.
Board members noted similar beacons have been installed elsewhere in the city and praised their effectiveness at slowing traffic at crossings. The funding would come from the city's infrastructure set-aside; staff said the project will be bid through DPW and that the authority's allocation will cover construction if bid results are within anticipated ranges.
The authority approved the allocation on a voice vote.
