Matt Wagner, a fifth-grade teacher at Peeks Mill Elementary School and the newly installed vice president of the Franklin County Education Association, introduced himself during the public-comment portion of the meeting and outlined goals for the coming school year.
Wagner thanked central-office staff for hosting the union at new-teacher orientation and praised recent district pay increases, which he said have helped recruit and retain educators. He said the association’s priorities include celebrating member work publicly, establishing on-site representatives at every work site to address issues with leadership, and exploring a merger that would bring classified staff (Kentucky Education Support Professionals Association) under the same local umbrella for equal protections and access.
Wagner said the union is rebuilding after pandemic-era disruptions and described his organization’s readiness to address legislative challenges that could affect educator benefits and protections. He closed by saying he looks forward to working with district leaders and board members this school year.
No board action was taken on Wagner’s remarks; his comments were received during the public-comment period.
