The Murray City Municipal Council and Mayor John Hales adopted a joint resolution Oct. 7 declaring Oct. 5–11, 2025, as Fire Prevention Week and urging residents to follow safety guidance for lithium‑ion batteries.
"The mayor and council do hereby proclaim October 2025 as fire prevention week throughout Murray City," the resolution reads, urging residents to "buy only certified products, charge batteries properly, and recycle batteries responsibly." The proclamation was read by Jeff Pohlz during the council meeting.
The resolution cites an increase in battery‑related fires and warns that improper charging, damaged cells and use of uncertified chargers can raise the risk of fire or explosion. It lists common household items powered by lithium‑ion batteries, including smartphones, laptops, power tools, e-bikes and e-scooters, and asks residents to support public-safety outreach by Murray City Fire and Emergency Services.
Council member Turner moved adoption of the resolution; Council member Goodman seconded. The roll call vote was 5–0 in favor.
The council did not attach additional regulatory measures to the proclamation; the action is a formal civic recognition and a public-education directive rather than an ordinance. Murray City Fire and Emergency Services will continue community outreach under the adopted calls to action.
