Southaven authorizes $111,000 engineering work to lower Star Landing hill, add signal at Sweeney

The Southaven Board of Aldermen authorized a work authorization with Civil Link on Sept. 30 for engineering services not to exceed $111,000 to lower the road grade on Star Landing approaching the Sweeney intersection, widen the intersection and install traffic signals.
City staff said the project will use local funds and the scope includes design, surveying, construction engineering and quality-control testing of materials. The staff presentation explained that sight distance is limited for westbound motorists on Star Landing because of a hill and that the project will grade down that rise and add signals and intersection widening to address safety concerns.
The board moved the project up in the capital improvement plan because opening the Mackin Veil–Sweeney connection has increased north-south traffic volumes in the area, staff said. “This project is … dangerous,” a city official said, adding that the work will improve visibility and traffic flow. The board approved the authorization by roll call.
Next steps: staff will finalize the work authorization and proceed with engineering services under the existing master contract; construction timing and traffic impacts will be scheduled and shared with the public.
