Superintendent announces LASER Chamber pilot, boardroom audio upgrade and new key‑communicators group

At the Sept. 8 meeting the superintendent and staff announced a set of community and communications initiatives: a pilot LASER program with the Chamber of Commerce to expose seniors to local businesses, a donated audio‑enhancement system for the boardroom, and a new district key communicators group scheduled to meet Sept. 26.
The LASER pilot, coordinated with the Chamber and involving roughly 10 seniors from Western Hills this cycle, will convene monthly and take students to different local businesses to provide workplace exposure and networking with community leaders. Mr. Osborne, who is coordinating the pilot with the Chamber, described the program as “a really good opportunity for our kids to see their potential, growth in the community and, for the community to get to see, the great folks in our school system.” The district said the pilot could be extended to serve more students after the first year.
The superintendent reported the district is working to expand audio enhancement systems in buildings over the next one to two years; the company supporting that effort has offered and shipped an audio enhancement system for the boardroom at no cost to the district. The boardroom system will add ceiling speakers and wearable microphones for presenters and visitors and is intended to improve sound for meetings and on‑site presentations.
Staff also announced the first key communicators meeting for Sept. 26. The superintendent said the group will include 40–50 community members, provide a two‑way communication channel between the district and local partners, and will be supported by community sponsors providing breakfast for the session.
In facilities updates, staff reported anticipated completion dates for active projects: Western Hills gym work is expected to finish in mid‑October (it may not be ready for the fall bridal event), and another project—referred to in the meeting as “Runway 9”—is expected in early December. Crew schedules place the Western Hills greenhouse about two weeks from completion, with work to follow at the Franklin County greenhouse.
No board action was required; these items were informational and staff said they will update the board as pilot programs and installations progress.
