A staff presenter for Los Altos School District on Thursday described plans to adopt the updated California Standards for the Teaching Profession, saying the district will transition from the 2009 standards to the 2024 version across this year and into the 2026–27 school year.
The presenter said the CSTP “describes what effective teaching looks like” and that the district will update evaluation documents and induction programming so the standards are in place for initial training and school-year implementation beginning in 2026–27. The presenter added that the new standards emphasize integrating social, emotional, cognitive and academic development and underscore equity and high expectations for all students.
The presenter summarized the standards’ six areas: engaging and supporting students; creating effective learning environments; understanding and organizing subject matter; planning instruction; assessing students for learning; and developing as a professional. “Teachers are at the heart of student learning,” the presenter said, adding that the standards offer common language for goal-setting and evaluation.
Board members had no substantive revisions during the presentation. The district said it will embed the 2024 CSTP in induction and evaluation materials this year, conduct training for principals and staff, and implement the standards districtwide for the 2026–27 school year.
The presentation did not propose an immediate formal change to board policy; instead, district staff described this as an administrative implementation process that will require updated evaluation forms and training. No formal vote was taken at the meeting on the CSTP adoption plan.
