Several speakers at public comment on Oct. 9 urged the Clark County School District to take immediate steps to reduce student traffic injuries and deaths, including more crossing guards, traffic enforcement and targeted bus pickups for younger students.
Parent and community member Lenny Leifer said the district needed more police traffic patrols and crossing guards after recent student collisions, and criticized mixed jurisdictional responsibilities (city, county) that make it hard for parents to know whom to contact. He said one school lost staff because of budget cuts and questioned why high-level hires and contracts appear large while campus-level positions were cut.
Kenneth Wilson and Dr. Robert Lee Jr. urged changes to transportation policy. Dr. Lee proposed allowing parents to request school bus service for students in sixth grade and younger who live within the district's two-mile no-bus zone as an accommodation based on parent need; he said limited additional stops or buses would cost less than more injuries or fatalities. Wilson asked the district to consider more crossing guards specifically to manage student bike egress.
Local student Alexander Tayani, an eighth grader and SOT student representative at Del Webb Middle School, said his school lost more than 200 students to rezoning and registration changes and warned that cuts have led to 10 teachers and staff being surplus-uncertain; he appealed to trustees to "keep students in mind" when making budget and staffing decisions.
Speakers did not record a formal board directive during the meeting; suggestions were entered as public comment and speakers said they expected district staff to follow up. The board did not announce immediate changes at the meeting.
