Stephenson County emergency management reports drills, app training and school outreach

An Emergency Management official told the Stephenson County committee the office attended the Northwest Illinois Emergency Preparedness Response Training Summit and participated in a StarCom 21 communications drill, both of which county staff described as successful.
The official said the county is reviewing its emergency operations plan; the state has not finalized whether a revised plan will be due by May 2026. The official also said the county is working with a pipeline-safety application identified as Vuxus and plans a November training for local fire departments, dispatchers and law enforcement to help first responders identify and respond to pipeline incidents.
The official described an outreach event planned for Oct. 28: a fifth-grade field trip, coordinated with Freeport School District staff identified in the record as Dess Summers, to the County Highway Department building. The visit will include demonstrations from emergency management, the National Weather Service and the sheriff’s office, and will set take-home guidance on how to call 911 and household escape plans.
The official also noted October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month and said the county continues work on credentialing. Committee members requested that event dates and details be emailed to the full board; the official agreed to do so.
