Summary
Michael DeVito, assistant director of planning, told the council the city issued its 100th permit for new homes in 2025 — a milestone the department said the city hasn’t reached in about 20 years — and that activity is spread across multiple districts.
Michael DeVito, assistant director of planning with the City of South Bend Community Investment Office, told the council on Sept. 8 that the city issued its 100th residential building permit for 2025 as of August.
DeVito said the count covers single-family homes, duplexes and townhouse units as defined by the International Residential Code. He said it was the first time in roughly 20 years the city had reached 100 permits, and that additional permit requests had been received since the August tally, meaning the city could exceed 100 by year’s end.
DeVito said new housing activity is occurring across all six council districts and that the department expects a strong total by the end of the year. The council thanked DeVito for the update; no formal action was taken.
