Council grants variance to allow alcohol sales near downtown church at 112 E. Avenue D

City Manager Ryan Haverlaw explained the variance request is needed because the site is within the 300-foot distance restriction of a church under Article 1, Chapter 12, Section 12.5-1 of the city's code of ordinances. Haverlaw said staff received a support letter from the church and recommended council approve the variance.
Councilmember John Hale moved to approve Resolution No. 2025-17; Christina Strophas seconded. Councilman Jack Smith abstained from the vote; the remainder voted in favor and the resolution carried.
Staff noted that approval is limited to the variance requested and that the property owner and applicant must comply with other licensing requirements and state law for alcoholic beverage sales.
