The Southaven Board of Aldermen adopted a resolution authorizing the city to file liens under Mississippi Code Section 21-19-11 for properties the city has cleaned or maintained where property owners did not perform required maintenance.
City staff said the lien authority applies to properties that have not been cut or maintained; once liens are filed and the assessment roll is finalized, the assessments will be transferred to the property tax roll in accordance with Mississippi Code 21-19-11.
Alderman Gallagher moved the resolution and Alderman Wheeler seconded. The board asked whether anyone in the audience had a financial interest in the properties and, hearing none, proceeded to a roll call vote that carried the motion.
The resolution gives the city authority to remediate property maintenance violations and seek recovery of the city’s costs through liens and tax assessments; staff did not identify specific properties or dollar totals during the public portion of the meeting.
