The Events & Commemorations Committee received an informational notice on Aug. 19 that Communities at Sunbury plans a back-to-school Color Run around the Red Shink Pool on Sept. 20 from 10 to 11:30 a.m.
A staff member said the route is around the pool, covers about 0.33 miles per lap, does not require road closures or city assistance for traffic control, and that the event has proceeded in previous years without incident. "It's, like, 0.33 miles that they run around there," a staff member said.
Staff told the committee the organizers notify police and fire and that last year there were no objections; the police chief advised staff that the event is larger than it may appear and should be reported annually so staff can support it as needed. "The police chief, yeah, he said to me, he said this event Daryl, this event is bigger than, you know, than you probably think. You just need to be aware of it," a staff member said.
Because the run uses walkways around the pool and not the public streets, staff said no action was required; the committee treated the item as an informational heads-up and wished the organizers well.
