The Monroe County Board of Education recognized two Teleco Plains High School students on Tuesday for National Merit commendation and for achieving a perfect 36 composite ACT score.
Russell (identified in the meeting as a school representative) introduced Jackson Plymons and Trooper Pills, noting both were National Merit Commended Scholars and that two students from Teleco Plains had achieved an ACT composite score of 36. Jackson Plymons said he intends "to go to university and get my degree in statistics and then work as an actuary." Trooper Pills said he aims for MIT or another engineering college and is "looking to get a degree in computer engineering and hopefully work in the robotics field."
In a separate district update, Dr. Windsor (identified in the meeting) said October enrollment stood at 4,765 students and reported the second Monroe Youth Excellence program had begun with four seniors from each of the district's three high schools participating. Dr. Windsor listed participating students from Sequoia High School, Teleco Plains High School and Sweetwater High School and said K–4 families will receive research‑based weekly messages through a program called Parent Powered as part of the governor's early literacy initiative. She also noted Sequoia High School's marching band recently won several second‑ and third‑place awards.
Facilities updates included a status report on three roofing projects. A facilities representative reported that the roof at Central Office is about 75% complete, with finishing details such as caps and metal sheeting underway; Sweetwater had held a preconstruction meeting and the contractor was developing a timeline.
The recognitions and updates were provided during the regular agenda and public portion of the meeting; no formal board action was required for the recognitions or the informational reports.
