County department heads told the Beaver County Board of Commissioners on Oct. 8 that several capital and recreational projects are on track and that the county has been managing some repairs in‑house to reduce costs.
At the work session, a department head said the parking garage project "is still on schedule" and that staff were "pleasantly surprised at how much progress" contractors had made during recent site visits. The speaker added, "Those those guys seem to be they know what they're doing. That's for sure."
The meeting also reviewed maintenance at the Ace Arena. Officials said an outside estimate to replace the arena gutters had been $50,000 to $60,000; after purchasing materials for about $18,000 and using county crews, staff estimated the final in‑house cost at "about $30 and $40,000," which the presenter described as a significant budget saving.
Staffers briefed commissioners on upcoming recreational events. A cross‑country meet at Brush Creek will feature 28 schools with a 3 p.m. start and a 1 p.m. walk‑through. A mountain bike event at Brady's Run Trails has about 115 registrations. Officials said the Rabbit Raccoon 100 has been moved to May and that organizers project as many as 2,000 participants; one speaker noted last year saw "1,400." The potential size of the Rabbit Raccoon 100 and other events were described as sources of economic impact, with one presenter saying some events draw "4,500 visitors" from multiple states.
Commissioners also discussed the privately run "pit race," confirming it is a private enterprise and that the county has no authority to keep it operating. Commissioner May (first name not provided in the meeting record) said, "there's nothing we can do as commissioner."
