Commissioners proclaim Sept. 21–27 as El Paso Startup Week to boost entrepreneurship

The El Paso County Commissioner's Court on Sept. 22 adopted a resolution recognizing El Paso Startup Week and urging residents, organizations and businesses to support the weeklong series of events aimed at promoting entrepreneurship.
Commissioner David Butler, who presented the resolution, said economic development "is central to the work that we do" and welcomed representatives from county economic development and local entrepreneurship groups. "Startups thrive, especially when governments play a role in partnering with our local organizations and startups and entrepreneurs," Butler said as he introduced the resolution.
The resolution celebrates a week of workshops, panels and networking events — described in the resolution as covering "fundamentals of starting a business, a series on marketing strategies, legal aspects for startups, wellness workshops, interactive panels, and cross‑border interdisciplinary collaborative opportunities." County economic development staff and partners from the Medical Center of the Americas Foundation, the Chamber of Commerce, Google Developer Group and the U.S. Small Business Administration were on hand to accept the recognition.
Nancy Lowry, senior director of innovation for the Medical Center of the Americas Foundation, said, "entrepreneurs, startups are the lifeblood of our community," and described the week as an opportunity "to celebrate, to learn, to connect." Dante Acosta, district director of the U.S. Small Business Administration, urged entrepreneurs to use SBA resources and to make appointments with the local office.
County staff singled out Sonia Sigala for organizing and coordinating county participation, and Roberto Ransom, the county's economic development director, joined partners at the podium. Event organizers said the week includes about 40 events and a pitch showcase scheduled for Oct. 30 that aims to draw investors from across the U.S. The resolution also notes that the week is led by over 25 entrepreneurial support organizations.
The motion to approve the resolution carried without dissent; the clerk recorded a motion from Commissioner Butler and a second from County Judge Ricardo Samaniego. The court noted Commissioner Coronado was absent for the vote.
