Council approves $35,000 in human‑services awards administered through VADO Foundation

Brenda, representing the VADO Foundation, told the Nevada City Council the foundation will administer $35,000 the council allocated in the fiscal‑year 2026 budget for human‑services grants and presented a board‑approved recommendation for awards to local nonprofits serving food, shelter and clothing needs.
Brenda said the foundation received applications totaling roughly double the available funding and that a volunteer review committee — including council representatives Luke Spence and Henry Portman and foundation members — scored applications and recommended awards. "This year, we received applications that, basically were double the amount of money that we had available," she said.
The foundation plans to invoice the city for $35,000, execute contracts with awardees, and distribute checks after contract signatures. Brenda said the foundation requires organizations to account for prior funds before receiving new awards and reported that all organizations recommended at this meeting were current on prior reporting and therefore eligible to receive funds.
Councilors thanked the foundation volunteers and planned a press release with a mayoral comment; one councilor noted that applicants’ combined request nearly doubled the amount in the city budget and that the shortfall indicates ongoing community need.
The council moved to approve the foundation's recommendation; the council vote to authorize payment and contract execution was recorded as approved. The foundation will provide the city manager (Karen) with the invoice and the foundation will complete the contracting steps prior to issuing funds.
