The Brookfield board approved lowering the speed limit on Moose Mountain Road to 25 mph, authorized town staff to obtain pavement-end/caution signage, and heard from the road agent that paving of the road is expected in October or November.
Road agent Chris told the board the contractor is “shooting for the October or the November to pave it,” and said grading and dust-control work remain ongoing. Residents and the board raised safety concerns about a blind crest where pavement currently drops to gravel; a resident said a bicyclist “almost dumped it” when the pavement dropped off out of sight.
The board directed staff to acquire a reusable pavement-ends sign (an estimated cost of about $350 for sign and stand was discussed) and to expedite installation; a board member offered to try to procure one within days. Members also agreed to notify the police department about the lowered speed limit so patrols can be aware of the change. The motion to reduce the speed limit to 25 mph was made, seconded and carried.
The board discussed other mitigation: improving signage near the pavement end, potentially lowering the posted speed to encourage safer driving, and continuing directed patrols and speed enforcement where appropriate. The road agent said additional gravel and compaction work will occur before paving to help achieve a stable surface for the upcoming paving work.
