Mayor Kinder announced Monday evening that an electrical failure at Cape Girardeau's main water plant affected one of three power supplies, caused a temporary loss of pressure and prompted a boil-water advisory for much of the city.
The advisory matters because low pressure can allow contamination to enter the distribution system; the mayor urged residents to consult the city website for a detailed map showing which streets are affected and for updates. "I am urging everyone, all of our citizens to go to the city website, and also your news outlets," Mayor Kinder said.
City crews and outside contractors worked to restore power. The mayor thanked crews from Ameren, KT Power, Kotner Electric and the city's staff for their response. According to the mayor's remarks, the failure impacted one of the plant's three electrical power supplies and the resulting loss of pressure led to the advisory.
Mayor Kinder said the advisory was expected to continue "through Thursday morning at 7AM," language he used during the meeting to describe the current expectation rather than a guaranteed end date. The city posted a map and additional guidance on its website, the mayor said; residents should follow those instructions until the advisory is rescinded.
No formal council vote or ordinance was taken on the matter during the meeting; the announcement was delivered as part of the mayor's remarks and the council directed residents to official city communications for further details and updates.
