City authorizes participation in new opioid manufacturer settlement through state allocation
Summary
The city authorized staff to sign a participation form so funds from a newly announced multi-manufacturer opioid settlement can be allocated through the state for local opioid-abatement purposes.
City Attorney Nick Manley told the board that another settlement with eight manufacturers in the ongoing opioid litigation had been reached and that the state will distribute funds to municipalities that choose to participate.
Manley asked the board to authorize the city’s participation form so the state can allocate the local share of any settlement funds to Southaven. He said prior opioid settlement funds must be used for opioid-abatement purposes.
Board action: Alderman Payne moved to authorize participation and Alderman Wheeler seconded; the motion passed on roll call.
Ending: staff will complete the participation paperwork by the stated internal deadline so the state can include Southaven in fund allocations.
