Board approves continuing Walgreens as on-site flu-shot provider for employees

The Board of Aldermen approved an agreement continuing Walgreens as the vendor to provide on-site flu shots for city employees as a convenience benefit.
Melanie (staff member) explained that employees are not restricted in where they receive vaccinations and that the city’s insurance covers shots delivered by many providers, including primary-care physicians, CVS, Walgreens, First Pharmacy Services and mobile providers. “This is just a convenience thing for those that might want to stop by here and have it done,” Melanie said.
Melanie said the city has used Walgreens for the employee flu clinics since 2017 and that the arrangement costs the city nothing directly because the vaccinations are billed through the city’s Blue Cross Blue Shield plan for covered employees. The board discussed the possibility of using a local provider but the majority supported continuing with Walgreens because of its established use and convenience.
Board action: Alderman Flores moved to approve the agreement; Alderman Gallagher seconded. The motion passed on roll call.
