The Verona superintendent apologized Tuesday for an erroneous districtwide attendance alert at the start of the school year that left many families alarmed.
School officials said the district is using a new alert system and that a mis-clicked radio button between two options produced the message showing many students as absent. The superintendent said, "We opened schools, to a great start with the exception of the erroneous attendance ... which was really, an unfortunate glitch. I know there were a lot of parents that were very concerned and and upset about that, and I did send an apology email." The superintendent said district IT staff member Mister Balazs is working with the vendors Genesys and Apigee to make sure the error does not recur.
The superintendent said she witnessed the incident at Landing Avenue School and called the situation "chaos". Board members and administrators acknowledged the disturbance and said they were taking steps with the vendors and IT staff to prevent a similar event.
No formal corrective action was recorded at the meeting beyond vendor follow-up and internal troubleshooting.
