Canfield Local board members spent substantial time Oct. 8 discussing a provision in recent state legislation that would allow students from other districts within a 20-mile radius to play on a host district’s hockey team if both superintendents agree.
The board heard competing views: supporters argued expanded eligibility could increase roster size, lower per-player costs and broaden access to a costly sport; opponents warned the change would set precedent for other sports, create administrative and discipline challenges, and could dilute opportunities for Canfield students. The district’s athletic director and coaches have shared input, and some board members described the provision as having been added into a larger House bill rather than routed through the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) membership process.
No formal board vote was taken. The superintendent said he would survey neighboring superintendents and athletic staff and report back; board members asked that any formal decision be preceded by more study and clear guidance on authority for eligibility, discipline and academic eligibility for visiting athletes.
Board members flagged operational issues that would need answers before implementing such a change: which district handles discipline and academic eligibility, how approvals would be documented, and whether the OHSAA or member principals would accept the change if the statute is permissive. The superintendent said the association historically has voted against similar changes and that the statute, if enacted, would supersede association bylaws.
