Resident urges mayor to sign 287(g) agreement so local police can assist federal immigration enforcement, cites federal funding

During public comment, resident Jerry Bloem urged the mayor to sign on to a section 287(g) agreement under the Immigration and Nationality Act so Shelton police could assist U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. "I've had to spoke to mayor Loretti last month about signing on to the immigration and nationality act of 1996, so specifically section 287(g), which will allow our police department to assist ICE in removing the illegal aliens in town," Bloem said.

Bloem told the board he believes federal law preempts any state action and said he had been told the Department of Homeland Security would pay the salaries of police departments that sign on. He urged aldermen to speak to the mayor about the matter. The board did not take action on the request during the meeting.
