The Board of Public Works and Safety on Oct. 7 approved an agreement allowing Interfaith Community Pads to use the train depot as a seasonal shelter beginning Oct. 15 and continuing through the cold-weather months while the organization searches for a more permanent location.
Staff said the group used the depot last winter and served a steady stream of clients once very cold weather set in. The board described the depot arrangement as temporary and noted the program typically operates through the winter; staff recalled the prior season running roughly from mid-October through April and said volunteers and financial donations are welcome.
“This will be the last year that they use the depot building while they find a more permanent spot in the city of La Porte... it will begin October 15,” a staff member said at the meeting.
The motion to approve the agreement passed. Board members encouraged volunteer participation and donations to support the shelter operations.
