Board authorizes bid process to replace Civic Center elevator pending HUD approval

The City of La Porte Board of Public Works and Safety approved a request on Oct. 7 to prepare and solicit bids for replacement of the Civic Center elevator using Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds, contingent on HUD approvals.
Staff said HUD must complete an approval process before the city can award contracts, but the board authorized moving ahead with the bid package preparation so work can begin promptly once approvals arrive. “We are working on putting together the bid package for the Civic elevator replacement. This is through CDBG. We don't have all the approvals yet, but, we wanted to make sure that we could start the process as soon as those approvals did come in,” staff said.
Staff indicated the project will likely require formal bidding and that the elevator replacement is important for accessibility, particularly for senior citizens who use the facility.
The motion to allow staff to solicit bids pending HUD approval passed without recorded dissent. Staff will proceed with bid preparation and return with procurement actions once HUD approvals are in place.
