Lee's Summit panel advances work on residential solid-waste RFP amid monopoly concerns

City staff said the RFP effort responds to a council strategic priority and to months of outreach. "The city council really began this initiative towards the end of last year with a strategic retreat [that] identified solid waste as one of its priority goals," Michael Park, director of public works, said. Park said staff and a citizen Solid Waste Task Force have held public meetings, HOA briefings and hauler engagements to shape the draft RFP.
Why it matters: contracting could change how about two-thirds of Lee's Summit residents receive curbside service and could affect service costs, truck routes and neighborhood traffic. Staff stressed that a formal change would not occur unless council decides to award a contract after seeing bids.
