Board moves March teacher workday to May 19 to observe primary election day

The Oldham County Board of Education voted Aug. 25 to amend the 2025–26 calendar by moving the March teacher workday to Tuesday, May 19, 2026, which is the state primary election day.
Assistant Superintendent Michael Williams presented four calendar options after noting that primary election day had been omitted from the original draft. He recommended moving the March teacher workday to May 19; building‑level administrators reportedly preferred that option. “We are used as polling places, we have to be closed,” Williams said when explaining the reason for a school closure on election day.
Under the approved change, March 13 becomes a regular student attendance day and the teacher workday will occur on May 19 so teachers may work in the building while schools are closed to students for polling. The board approved the motion unanimously.
Board members said they had consulted building administration and staff in developing the recommendation and noted options considered included converting President’s Day, adding a day at year end, or the originally proposed swap in the packet. The board emphasized this calendar adjustment was implemented to reduce disruption and align with building preferences.
The amended calendar will appear in district materials and the working calendar will be reflected in schedules distributed to families.
