Beaverton planning staff told the forum the city has produced thousands of housing units in the last decade and is pursuing code updates and infrastructure strategies to meet future housing production targets while addressing stormwater constraints in the downtown area.
An official for the City of Beaverton reported that developers and builders produced more than 5,000 housing units within the city during the prior 10 years, an average near 500 units per year, and that the city’s housing production strategy estimates another 9,900 units are needed over the next 20 years. The strategy includes 20 actions to be completed by 2029, such as code updates, housing incentives and policy changes.
City staff also described a planned Downtown Beaverton sub‑basin stormwater strategy being developed with Clean Water Services and other partners to help developers manage creek, floodplain and stormwater requirements. The strategy would allow developers to pay mitigation fees in exchange for conveyance of lands unsuitable for development, potentially freeing buildable area and providing new public green space.
Beaverton staff provided examples of city‑supported affordable housing and redevelopment projects that are underway or in negotiation, and indicated ongoing process improvements for permitting and metrics tracking. No council votes or new ordinances were adopted at the forum; the presentation summarized strategies and projects in planning or implementation stages.
