The Traffic, Bicycle and Pedestrian Commission voted to advance a 90‑day trial that removes on‑street parking on a section of Dousman Street to allow a temporary bike‑lane extension.
Alder Proffitt (District 7) brought the request to the commission, saying the lane is currently discontinuous and that neighbors asked for continuation “because it is really odd because it is 2 lanes at 1 point, but then it goes down to just 1 lane. But then it's very wide.” He also noted a speed board showed significant speeding at Dousman and described the change as a traffic‑calming measure requested by residents.
Commission discussion emphasized phasing: removing parking first and using a 90‑day trial before painting permanent lane lines in the spring. Commissioners noted the tradeoff between parking access and safety; one commissioner said the proposal should be tied into broader improvements planned to Ashland and Broadway and into an upcoming neighborhood association review. Neighbors and commissioners raised concerns that removing parking would be unpopular for some residents, and Proffitt acknowledged he had not informed one vocal resident he expected to oppose the change.
Commissioner Carol Knight made the motion to advance the 90‑day trial; Larson seconded. The commission voted in favor and the motion carried.
Staff said if the trial proceeds and residents object, alder offices will explain the reason for the temporary removal — to create space for the bike lane prior to permanent striping.
