Missoula proclaims Climate Solutions Week and highlights local climate actions

Missoula officials on Monday read a joint proclamation with Missoula County declaring Sept. 27–Oct. 5 Climate Solutions Week and invited residents to a kickoff Climate Fest at Caras Park.

Mayor Andrea Davis read the proclamation, which said Missoula County and the city have committed to implementing the Climate Ready Missoula plan and to using 100% clean electricity in the urban area by 2030, and highlighted the joint Electrify Missoula campaign in collaboration with Climate Smart Missoula.

Amy Sullenberg of Climate Smart Missoula thanked the city and described the week’s programming. “This is our third annual Climate Solutions Week,” Sullenberg said. “Almost everything is free. Again, there's a lot of partner groups … you can find the schedule at missoulaclimate.org.”

City staff and the mayor also noted local municipal work in the climate space: completion of the city’s fiscal‑year 2024 municipal greenhouse gas inventory, new energy management software for tracking municipal energy use, and a draft municipal climate action roadmap that staff will refine with a task force this winter. The mayor said the city secured a state stormwater grant to install a green roof on the Missoula Public Library, with the local match provided by the Missoula Redevelopment Agency.

Why it matters: The proclamation and staff remarks highlight local climate mitigation and resilience projects and community events intended to inform residents about decarbonization, electrification and adaptation measures.

Next steps: Climate Solutions Week events will run Sept. 27–Oct. 5 with a Caras Park Climate Fest kickoff; staff will convene a municipal task force to finalize a 3–5 year implementation roadmap and will continue to track municipal energy projects with the new software.
