Council hears Wright County construction schedule, city public-safety plans ahead of closures

City Engineer Ron and other staff said Marlow Avenue and County Road 137 will close for roundabout construction beginning Sept. 15, with work likely lasting six to eight weeks. A trail closure on Odeon Avenue is scheduled to start Sept. 22, and work on County Road 42 (Cassatt 42) is starting on the 10th with crews then moving to 80th Street, Ron said. City staff also noted Wright County’s five-year highway plan shows the roundabout at County Road 39 and County Road 19 in the 2028 timeframe.
Wright County and local enforcement staff described how detours often push traffic through residential neighborhoods and said the city will use speed trailers and targeted patrols during closures. "Anytime we have road closures, the detour always seem to go through the places that people don't want people speeding…so those speed trailers are for that and the enforcement if we need to do so," a sergeant said. The sergeant added that the department is tracking school-bus and other violations and will investigate reports; he also noted that state statute allows ticketing by license-plate in certain cases, but that deputies investigate before issuing citations.
Other council briefings included a report that the city has a live community survey with more than 400 responses, a reminder about the Otsego Prairie Festival and a request to contact Elk River Municipal Utilities about lighting outside the Great River Center and Target.
Why it matters: Planned closures and detours can change traffic patterns and increase speeding risks in residential areas, especially with school in session. Officials said they will coordinate placement of enforcement resources and speed-warning devices and will monitor bus-stop violations reported by community members.
