South Granville High School held its 2025 commencement ceremony at the school's athletic field, where Superintendent Dr. Stan Winborn pronounced 143 seniors graduates and invited them to turn their tassels.
The ceremony featured remarks from Principal Kevin Ferrell; Dr. Helen Lindsay, chairperson of the Granville County Board of Education; salutatorian Madison Martinez Molina; and valedictorian Jaden Esau. Speakers focused on perseverance, setting goals, and acknowledging the teachers, families and programs that supported the Class of 2025.
The event opened with Principal Kevin Ferrell welcoming attendees and recognizing school and county officials in attendance, including Superintendent Dr. Stan Winborn and Board Chair Dr. Helen Lindsay. Dr. Lindsay gave a commencement address framed around the metaphor “choose the right route,” urging graduates to “get back up” after setbacks, present themselves well in opportunities and “surround yourself with positive people.”
Salutatorian Madison Martinez Molina thanked family and teachers for support and said the class should “remember these wonderful people who have given you these amazing opportunities.” She announced that she will attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Valedictorian Jaden Esau reflected on motivation and asked graduates to consider “what drives your ambition,” saying success should be measured by fulfillment rather than external expectations.
Administrators announced academic recognitions and diploma distinctions. The ceremony stated Latin‑honor ranges as follows: weighted GPA 3.75–3.99 (cum laude), 4.00–4.249 (magna cum laude), and 4.25 and above (summa cum laude). Students inducted into the National Honor Society and the National Technical Honor Society, recipients of the North Carolina Academic Scholar distinction, varsity scholar‑athletes, arts‑education endorsement recipients and citizenship diploma endorsement recipients were named during the ceremony.
Superintendent Dr. Stan Winborn delivered the formal pronouncement: “By the power vested in me by the state of North Carolina and the Granville County Board of Education, I hereby declare you graduates. You may turn your tassels.” Following the pronouncement the presentation of diplomas continued as names were read aloud.
The ceremony included musical performances by the South Granville Chorus and recognition of special guests and veterans in attendance. Organizers noted the participation of school staff who supported awards and diploma endorsements. The commencement program concluded with diploma presentation and a brief reception for graduates and families.
