James White, a newly sworn student board member, told the Lockport Twp HSD 205 Board of Education on Aug. 18, 2025, that he and fellow student member Ryan Gleason will attend monthly board meetings and that student leaders are focusing on implementation of the district’s new phone policy.
White said the student report summarized teacher guidance given at the district’s Aug. 14 teacher institute and described “how students reacted to the phone policy on the first day of school.” He urged classmates that “cell phones, headphones, and AirPods should not be used in the hallways during the school day,” adding that phones remain permitted in cafeterias and in some cases in the board.
The student report said the district will release a video detailing expectations for personal technology use during the school day; the date for that video was not specified at the meeting. During the foundation report, Mrs. Adolph announced five new scholarship opportunities open to Lockport seniors and described the community’s contribution as “hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarship opportunities.” The foundation encouraged all eligible seniors to apply.
During the curriculum report, Dr. Chris DeFaro and Dr. Huntington described a proactive transition of the guidance department into a broader student services structure intended to support students across academic and nonacademic needs. The report framed the change as an administrative reorganization to provide broader supports but did not present a formal board action or vote on implementation at the Aug. 18 meeting.
In the principal’s report, Dr. Green and Dr. Johnson thanked staff for preparing schools for the first day and said students left the building with smiles. No motions or board votes on phone policy enforcement, scholarships or the guidance-to-student-services change were recorded in the meeting transcript; the items appeared as reports and informational updates.
The district swore in four student board members at the start of the meeting: James White and Ryan Gleason as general student members; Abigail Cara as the finance and facilities student member; and Evelyn Shielarczyk as the curriculum committee student member. The board did not record a motion or vote in the provided transcript excerpt related to those oath ceremonies.
