Highway staff outline summer paving, bridge work and culvert replacement

DeKalb County highway staff briefed the commissioners May 27 on a suite of summer road and bridge projects, including planned paving, culvert replacement and ongoing bridge work.
Staff said API is scheduled to begin community-crossings paving in July on County Roads 35, 60 and 72 and that paving on portions of Auburn Drive is tentatively scheduled for the same period. Dust-control crews are tentatively scheduled for June. The highway department has begun roadside mowing and is placing pipes on Berman and Kitchen roads.
Culvert replacement: Staff said a culvert for County Road 35 (south of County Road 12) will be delivered the day after the meeting and crews expect to begin installation the following week.
Bridge work: Bridge 17 (on County Road 79) is undergoing deck removal; staff described using a mini excavator with a hammer to remove the deck and noted the process is time-consuming, with crews removing the existing deck and preparing the structure for replacement. Staff said the existing deck had significant deterioration.
Sidewalk decision on Bridge 503: Staff reported Auburn will not participate in a sidewalk or widening project on Bridge 503 (Auburn Drive), and the county plans to proceed with bridge repairs without widening or adding a sidewalk. Staff said Auburn officials felt there was not sufficient connectivity demand in that area to justify participation.
Why it matters: The projects involve county-maintained roads and bridges where closures and construction will affect travel and local access; culvert and bridge work addresses safety and infrastructure condition.
Next steps: Staff will proceed with scheduled deliveries, coordinate with API for paving in July, begin dust-control work in June if schedules hold, and continue bridge-deck removal and replacement work. Commissioners asked staff to monitor schedules and report any changes.
