Committee recommends Drew Herron for Historic Preservation Commission seat

The Bloomington City Council appointments committee interviewed Drew Herron, a local real estate agent, and moved to recommend him for a council-appointed seat on the Historic Preservation Commission.

Herron told the committee he has worked in real estate for about three years, increasingly on new construction, and wants to “diversify my knowledge” to include historic preservation. He described two types of demolition-delay cases that shaped his interest: a failing garage posing safety risks to neighbors and college students, and an elderly homeowner seeking to fill a deteriorating pool that had become a hazard. “The safety part of it is what a big part of what I enjoyed about that,” Herron said.

The committee asked about procedural and practical issues in preservation work. Herron said he would balance preserving historic character with cost and feasibility, and recuse himself where conflicts of interest arise, for example family members or direct business involvement. He affirmed ability to attend meetings, noting his schedule is flexible but that he has a five-month-old child and occasional constraints.

Committee members reminded Herron that some Historic Preservation Commission appointments are nonvoting council appointments (with possible later elevation to a mayoral, voting appointment) and that decisions are guided by city code, planning codes and commission bylaws. The committee also noted a co-hosted public meeting about Bloomington historic code scheduled for Oct. 15 and encouraged attendance.
