The DeKalb County Board of Commissioners approved July 25 a three-year School Resource Officer (SRO) contract beginning in the 2026–27 school year with Garrett Keisler Butler (as identified in the meeting packet). The change shortens the term from five years to three years and reflects updated compensation figures.
Commissioners discussed the per-officer cost the school will pay under the contract: $67,006.31 for salary, $2,000 for vehicle use and $2,500 for police equipment. The contract’s payment terms require half of the payment on or before Aug. 1 of the school year. The presenter noted these amounts had not been adjusted in five years and required updating to reflect wage increases for officers.
County counsel (or staff) reviewed the contract format and said it included clear line-item amounts as previously requested. Sheriff Thomas had reviewed and provided the contract to county staff, and presenters said he was comfortable with its terms.
A motion to accept the SRO contract with Garrett Keisler Butler was made, seconded, and approved by voice vote. The contract will begin July 2026 for the 2026–27 school year; commissioners did not discuss the total number of officers covered in the July 25 session.
