Barnstable, Aug. 20, 2025 — The Barnstable School Committee unanimously approved a new district homework policy that sets recommended nightly time limits by grade and gives building leaders discretion to include specifics in school handbooks.
Under the adopted policy, recommended time expectations ramp up by grade level, with a suggested high‑school cap of two hours per night for typical coursework; gateway, honors and AP classes may require additional work, the policy notes.
“I support this policy, and I especially support it because it came from the students,” said School Committee member Jen, citing student input on workload and balance. Committee members said the policy is intentionally broad so teachers and principals can adapt homework expectations for each grade and course.
Assistant Superintendent Kristen (assistant superintendent) and committee members described the approach as progressive and flexible: it provides guardrails for families and educators while leaving curricular and grading decisions to schools and teachers. The motion to adopt passed unanimously.
Why it matters: The policy aims to balance academic rigor with students’ out‑of‑school time and mental health, while preserving principals’ and teachers’ authority to set course‑level expectations.
Next step: District staff will incorporate the policy language into school handbooks and provide guidance to principals and teachers on consistent messaging to families.
