The City of Falls City Council voted to table a proposed employee cell-phone policy after members requested additional information on mobile device management (MDM) licensing and control options for city data on personal phones. The motion to delay consideration passed unanimously.
Staff presented a draft policy that would provide either a city-issued phone or a per-pay-period reimbursement for employees who use personal devices for city work. The draft estimates a reimbursement amount of $18.46 per pay period for employees who opt to use a personal phone for city business, and noted the city’s present monthly per-phone cost ranges roughly between $45 and $60.
Council members raised questions about controls for city data on personally owned devices and asked the IT director to return with pricing for MDM licenses. Staff explained MDM functions include requiring a PIN or lock, allowing remote wipe or lock of lost devices, and enabling removal of city apps if a device falls out of compliance. Staff estimated MDM licensing at roughly $5–$8 per user per month but said they would return with firm pricing and recommended language to add to the policy.
Councilmember Buck moved to postpone the item pending those details; Councilmember Burke seconded. The motion carried 6–0. Staff will return with MDM costs and proposed policy language for further council consideration.
