Toledo school board adopts resolution recognizing Hispanic Heritage Month

The Toledo Public School Board of Education voted Sept. 23 to adopt a resolution recognizing National Hispanic Heritage Month, Sept. 15 through Oct. 15, and to encourage district schools to engage students, staff and community members in activities that honor Hispanic and Latino histories and contributions.

Board member Chino Miles read the resolution to the board before a motion to adopt it. The resolution text notes the national observance dates and this year’s theme, "preserving legacy, building futures, empowering communities through heritage," and calls on the district to promote inclusive lessons and events.

Board discussion following the reading emphasized representation and inclusion. Several trustees spoke in favor of the resolution, highlighting district bilingual programs and student involvement at cultural events. "This year's theme ... emphasized the importance of connecting with and protecting the country's riches, culture, and heritage," the resolution states when read aloud.

A motion to approve the resolution was made and seconded; the board recorded an affirmative roll-call vote. Members recorded as voting yes during the roll call included Missus Garfin, Missus Hartwig, Mister Vasquez, Miss Barnes and Mister Parker. The presiding officer announced the resolution adopted following the roll call.

The board encouraged schools and community partners to plan lessons and events beyond the month to maintain inclusive programming year-round. Board members said the district's bilingual academy and student programs provide examples of how cultural celebration is integrated into school activities.

The adopted resolution is included in the meeting packet posted on the district's website and is part of the board's official minutes.
